An internationally backed $25 million sports academy has opened in the heart of the Gold Coast.
After years of planning and construction, the Russian-backed KDV Sport is opening the doors of its state-of-the-art golf and tennis academy at Carrara opposite Metricon Stadium.
Olympic Gold medallist TV presenter Giaan Rooney, tennis legend Henri Leconte and Mayor Tonm Tate helped Russian backed KDV Sport to officially open its doors to the Gold Coast community.
The development includes a two-storey golf driving range bays; a 12-hole golf course, an 18-hole mini golf course, 20 tennis courts, a practice wall, two kids' courts and three Padel tennis courts.
There's also an 80-seat restaurant and two function rooms, barbecue facilities, children's playground, a gym, sauna, spa, ice baths and a rooftop pool.
And there is more to come. KDV Sport director Julia Shtengelova says the company is already planning a second stage which was planned to include soccer pitches and a 70-room student campus and education facilities.
Ms Shtengelova said the project was inspired by the world-class sports academies found overseas.
"We are making a long-term commitment to the Gold Coast and KDV Sport is investing into the Gold Coast community,'' she said.
"We are using state-of-the-art technology to help improve the performance of athletes and to put the Gold Coast on the map as an international sports training hub".
"We are hopeful our world class facility and our world class professional team will create a one-stop destination to sportsmen and women".
Ms Shtengelova said the group had attracted former Olympians and top-level coaches and instructors, in partnership with Tennis Australia and the PGA, to the facility. The media launch attracted the likes of former Olympic gold medal swimmer Giaan Rooney, former tennis professional Henri Leconte, and soccer identity John Kosmina.
The KDV Group, which is headed up by Ms Shtengelova's brother Denis Shtengelova, is headquartered in Tomsk, Russia. The company produces 350 different types of confectionary and snack products in its 11 factories across Russia.
In 2011 KDV Group acquired Carrara Gardens Golf Course, which has been operating for the past 35 years.
The new sports centre caters for beginners and school group right through to sports professionals.
