Hairdressers win September business excellience award

A Gold Coast company that has celebrated its 50 year in business has claimed one of the major honours at this month’s Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards.

Luigi's Men’s Hairstylist, which Luigi D'Adderio set up way back in 1961, has won the Family Business Award for September.

The family business is now run Liugi and his two sons Lino and Joey and they operate three salons on the Gold Coast: two men’s salons at Crestwood Plaza at Molendinar and at the Q-Super Centre at Mermaid Waters and the Mojo Hair Cafe unisex salon at Southport.

Joey D'Adderio said his father left a very small town in Italy and migrated to Australia to chase his dreams.

He said his father set up his first salon with a friend in Surfers Paradise in 1961.

“He then expanded the business to include another salon in the Southport CBD,’’ said Joey.

“By 1989 he had four barber shops and Lino and I started to follow in our dad’s foot steps.

“Now, 22 years on, here we are, having had barber shops all over the coast.”

Luigi believes that he and his employees would have been responsible for millions of haircuts since then.

While Luigi is now semi-retired, the family’s continuing success and longevity in business has been no fluke. Luigi, Lino and Joey have all won the Queensland Master Hairdresser State Championship.

“We have also won the American Crew photographic competitions that are held once a year and to top it off, my brother Lino has become an American Crew Allstar, of which only 32 hairdressers in world have this title’’ said Joey.

“We're not too bad at our job all thanks to our father Luigi.”

A much younger company, Your Inspiration at Home, also claimed an award.

The party plan operation, which was set in March 2010, manufactures and distributes a range of spices, dips, oils and other food products, through a network of more than 250 consultants.

The company, headed up by Colleen Walters and Steven Magarry, reached revenue of $1 million within 16 months and now the company is already exporting to the UK and the USA.

In the highly contested Tourism, Hospitality and Events category, the Biggera Waters-based NRMA Treasure Island Holiday Park claimed the honours. The holiday park offers 4 1/2 star holiday accommodation ranging from villas to caravan and camping sites. Facilities on the site include including resort pools, tennis court, bistro and bar, mini-golf, jumping pillow, go karts and a kids club.

Renewable energy engineering company Eco-kinetics, which installs 400 solar systems a week throughout Australia, won the Environmental Management category while online education company Beyondedge claimed the Information Technology and Multimedia award.

In the other categories PWR Performance Products claimed the Manufacturing and Construction honour, Adbri Masonry won the Mayor’s Innovation award, KT Cable Accessories won the Retail Wholesale and Distribution category and AC-TEC Services claimed the trophy Trades, Professions and Services.

All the monthly winners from 2011 will eligible for the annual awards which will be presented at the Black Tie Gala Presentation in November.
